Fun on the allotment.

I'm a student, chef, gardner, photographer and general procrastinator. On the 5th November 2011 I inherited an old battered allotmentand started this blog so people can watch as I work and play to make it my dream larder.
Did some work on my raspberry plants today.

I thought about digging them up completely, working the soil and re-planting. But I’m going to be replacing, or at least moving, these canes in the next year or two anyway so decided against it.

Instead I applied some liquid feed and a good mulch.

The liquid feed was a tomato one, probably not the best but it was all I had. I then applied the mulch in 3 layers: first pure grass cuttings, then a mix of equal parts grass cuttings, manure and vermiculite, and finally a thin layer of just compost.

The aim is to hold in moisture while also providing something for the worms to break down and carry into the soil. I’ll also add a feed of bonemeal or grow more later in the season, once the canes are established.
